A quick glance at our day touring the Forbidden City

I have so much to write about our day but not much time to do it now. So, instead I am posting some pictures of the incredible day we had.

We visited the Forbidden City on Sunday and loved it. What an incredible world of history to walk through.

Bethany was so good which made it even more special and memorable. What a blessing this little girl is to both of us. Once we are done our group touring on Wednesday we will be off on our own. We look forward to travelling Tim & Liz adventure style but with our baby girl with us.

Will write more later but I wanted to show off our Little Empress.

Saying good-bye to Nanning

Travelling first-class in Mommy's arms

"I love my crib"

"I love my new room.....can't wait to see the real one"

Today was yet another surreal day. We flew out of Nanning to Beijing for the second "lag of our trip". Both Tim and I both have come to feel the loss that Bethany does not have any idea is taking place in her life.
It is very hard to explain but we felt that in leaving Nanning we were saying good-bye to someone...and leaving behind something of great meaning.
To me personally, I will forever have a sense of sadness for Lin-Zi's birth mother's loss but at the same time a sense of gratitude for having my baby girl Bethany in our lives and in our family. As I walked along the streets of Nanning I looked around me and could not help but think that somewhere nearby was a woman who has to feel the loss of her child. I do not know and will never understand what she has gone and will always go through but that is not for me or anyone to judge. It has to be a very difficult and grave loss that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. I only hope and pary that somehow and in some way she knows that her baby girl is loved and will have a fulfilled life with parents who will give her everything she needs in life.
So, as we took off and Bethany sat in my lap eating Mums, waving her chubby little hands as if to say "keep it coming Mommy, give me more"....in silence I said good-bye to the place that was her home for her first 10 months of life and to her birth mother. One day we will be back. Tim and I will bring her back home.
Considering it was her first time flying, Bethany was exceptionally calm and totally oblivious of the big step her life was taking.
As her Daddy took her in the aisle for a break, she just looked towards the back of the plane and started to wave at the passengers who all of a sudden had a huge smile on their faces and waved back at her. She is definitely a social little butterfly and knows how to capture an audience with all her cuteness. She managed to sleep for almost one hour and give us the confidence and relief that our upcoming 14 hour flight back home may not be the nightmare we were anticipating. Mind you, this was only a three hour flight and 14 hours are 14 hours.
We are excited to be in Beijing. Last week was a very low-key week. We spent the majority of the time in our hotel room getting acquainted with our little Princess. It has helped alot because even though we may have more work to do with attachment issues, she has already started to smile more and show off more of her active personality.
This week we are looking forward to doing alot of sight-seeing. As Tim put it "this is a trip of a lifetime"; therefore, we will make the most out of every moment we are here in this incredible historic country that has brought us such endless joy. Otherwise, this would not be a Tim & Liz adventure trip.
We are staying at a very lavish hotel, Jianguo Garden Hotel Beijing. It is in the heart of the shopping district that reminds me very much of the main strip in Las Vegas. The strip is stunningly gorgeous at night....as our bus made its way to our hotel we were mesmerized by the lights. There are lights everywhere; flashing, colourful and animated lights. We have so much to see, do and shopping to enjoy. So we look forward to our week stay. Our big day will be on Monday when we visit the Great Wall of China.
In our hotel in Nanning, Bethany would cry when we entered the room. It was a feeling of stress and anxiety, which was very visible, that made her cry. Perhaps because it was the first place where she came to realize that her Foster Mother was no longer around. She has now spent one week with us and the transformation from the very sad and cautious little girl to the rambunctious little fireball is incredible.
When we entered the hotel room, Bethany became so happy and started the "bounce of joy" that we are now familiar with. We put her into her crib and without a whimper or hesitation she grabbed onto the rail and just held herself up. The stressed little girl we saw in Nanning is gone.
In her tiny ways...in her smile; in the teasing manor she waves her chubby fingers at you; in the attentive manor she stares into our eyes and the constant non-stop chattering....she is telling us that she is happy with Mommy and Daddy.

Happy Birthday Uncle Shawn!!

The day would not be complete without our distance but loving birthday wish to an extraordinary person in our lives. From day one of our journey he was encouraging and more than willing to help in any way he could.

We have been thinking about you all day and with the time change can not figure what time let alone the date. But we wanted to make sure you know we are thinking about you and can't wait for Bethany to meet "The Best Man" literally.

Have a fantastic birthday and well-deserved vacation.

hugs & kisses from China....Tim, Liz & Bethany

Ready for a day of touring in the first outfit I bought for her

The infamous bamboo bridge in Qing Xiu Shan Park

We went on a tour of a very well-known park here in Nanning: Qing Xiu Shan Park, located approximately 30 minutes from our hotel. We were glad to go out and see something special about Nanning and take Bethany outdoors for some air. She is very active but a very very good baby.

She does fuss and cry still at night time when it's time to go to bed but that is to be expected. There are some times she will just rest her head on my shoulder and whimper a little bit and I can see her eyes all sparkly. I think she has few moments of sadness but we have faith that she will eventually grow to understand that we are not going anywhere....we are Mommy and Daddy forever.

I was so excited to dress her up with the first outfit I bought for her right after we received the news of our referral. I had no idea what her size was or even if it would fit. AND it did. She looked like a total princess in her white velour outfit...as you can see from her picture. I told her she has a closet full of stylish clothes and that Auntie Jennifer & Cousin Asia also bought her a bikini....she just looked into my eyes and as I said "yes, yes it's true" she started to clap her hands. In my mind she totally understood me.

She is still very attached to Tim more than me but that's just perfect for me because it gives me time to do things and prepare for her feedings and clean up a bit while he plays with her and entertains her. We have even started the tag-team habit for eating and she has been very good about it.

Qing Xiu Shan Scenic Area is just south of the city of Nanning. It is a large park filled with pavilions and lakes. It also features the longest bamboo walkway in the world: 521 meters long, and they built it in only 70 days!

There is a restaurant adjacent to a huge pond filled with fish...almost similar to the ponds at the Mandarin Restaurant. Well, ok maybe not quite the same as you can see from the picture above. And maybe the fish are not quite the same either....see for yourself in the pictures above. I did have a Liz "mishap", just can't be avoided. I was throwing in feed to the fish and the bag slips out of my hand and falls into the water as the fish are savagely jumping over each other to get the feed. The people you see around me in the picture all gasp and start the "oh noooo" talk behind and around me. They sounded so disappointed and Tim calls out "don't worry, you'll find the bag in the floating fish". Yikes! Caught on video....but unfortunately having trouble again with my video downloading, sorry.

We love our Angel.....baby Bethany

Tim and I are totally astounded that such a small, but chubby, little girl with such stunning eyes, precious lips and kissable cheeks......can make two people from across the world fall madly in love with her in a matter of 2 1/2 days.

Well, we truly believe it..........

Our Firsts Montage

We had a great day off to ourselves with alot of firsts as Bethany's Mom & Dad. She is a very interesting individual. We've found out she loves to try all kinds of foods and also likes music. She's a groover.
These are some of our firsts captured yesterday and today........

The Official Day

Mom Jill with Maya; Mom Liz with Bethany and Mom Louisa with Ava
The Lee Family

Receiving gifts from the Director of the Orphanage

Exchanging gifts with the Director

I've always been opposed to the baby carriers because they look so uncomfortable but have learned it is very important for your adopted child because you need to hold them close to you as much as possible so they learn that you are here with them forever.
I put mine on this morning and what a laught.....just not the same as our practice run at home with Bethany's teddy bear. He didn't squirm or cry in my face as we fumbled with clips and hooks. But after half an hour at this, it was on and what a great feeling to have her close and tight, not to mention giving my arms a break from holding her. I'm still not sure about them but for now it is the best thing for us and she actually enjoys it. When we traded with Daddy she quietly slept and took her nap.
Tuesday morning we headed off to the Welfare Office where we met our babies for the first time. We were to be sworn in by the Government Official as legal parents of our babies.
It was so emotional to be walking back into the room holding our babies. We also had a chance to meet the Director from the orphanage and the Nanny Supervisor who did home visits with the foster families. We were given the chance to ask them questions about our babies and exchange gifts in gratitude. We did not know that they too would be giving us gifts.
When the Director saw Bethany he called her by her nick name "Jun Jun" and she smiled at him. He was also grinning from ear to ear and I am certain he had misty eyes as he went around the room watching each family with their babies. We received our official documents of adoption and the Director gave us a silver bangle for Bethany along with a CD of pictures of her before we met her. Tim and I LOVE them. I have chosen one of my favorites and posted it as my profile picture for my blog. It is sad to see pictures of her with her Foster Mother. I am so greatful for the love and care this Special Lady has given our angel in the past four months. Thanks to this Lady, Bethany is a very healthy and happy little girl.
We were able to ask the Nanny questions too. Our friends were impressed by how prepared Tim and I were with a list of questions. They said it looked like we were gathering information to do a CNN documentary. Among all the questions we were told that she is very outgoing and friendly, that everywhere she goes people go to her and she befriends them. So, she is already like her parents, friendly like her mom & dad but most of all very hyper like her Daddy.
Once we were done, we headed to the local Wal-Mart and bought enough food to keep us going while in our room. When we got back we fed her and put her to sleep because she missed her morning nap. She slept for 3 solid hours while we watch a movie and got some rest ourselves.
She is a really good baby and sleeps through the night without fussing or crying for her bottle as mentioned in her schedule.
